Chipola Healthy Start Coalition

Our Story

We are a community based, non-profit organization focused on improving the health and well being of pregnant women, their infants and children. Chipola Healthy Start is one of 32 coalitions throughout Florida established in 1991 to implement the provisions of Florida’s Healthy Start legislation. Our membership consists of community-based organizations and individuals interested in improving maternal and child health outcomes. The Coalition coordinates a system of care that guarantees all women have access to services that promote optimal growth and development.

The key functions of the Healthy Start Coalition are to:

  1. Conduct community assessment,
  2. Develop community-level strategic plans to address maternal and child health issues that come from the assessment,
  3. Allocate funds received from the state of Florida and private sources to provide the best services available for pregnant women and infants up to the age of three, and
  4. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the services for which the providers are paid.

The Coalition’s key functions are linked to each county's health indicators. Health indicators are statistics that measure the health and well-being of the residents of Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty and Washington counties. The health of a community is gauged by the number of low birth weight babies and infant deaths. You will find your county health indicators that define our community’s health status on www.floridacharts.com.

Chipola Healthy Start also encourages you to read our latest publications for up-to-date health statistics to learn more about your community. This information helps to guide future strategies to improve the well-being of mothers, babies and families. Once you become familiar with our successes and the areas needing improvement, we invite you to think about how you can help your community to achieve our vision and improve the community in which you live.
