October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It's estimated that 1 in 3 women have experienced some form of physical abuse from an intimate partner in their lifetime (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence), and each year more than 320,000 women experience violence during pregnancy (CDC). Women who are in an abusive relationship prior to pregnancy can expect the abuse to continue and sometimes worsen, and for some women, intimate partner violence (IPV) begins during or as a result of pregnancy.
